British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."
During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
